Abstract: The control parameters and associated processes for a fusion reactor are identified and classified in seven control categories. Basic control concepts are introduced. A short historical overview is given of the developments in modern systems and control theory and control engineering. The state-of-the-art of the field of fusion plasma control for the 7 categories. Special emphasis will be put on those developments that are relevant for Nuclear Fusion research in general and - if time allows - for the SPARC programme in particular.

Bio: Prof.dr. Marco de Baar is director of the Dutch Institute for Fundamental Energy Research DIFFER. In addition he is a full professor at the Mechanical Engineering Faculty of Eindhoven University of Technology. Marco's main scientific interest is the control of nuclear fusion plasmas, including the development of sensors.

Bio: Dr. Matthijs van Berkel received PhD in 2015 in Mechanical Engineering: Control Systems Technology on the system identification for the estimation of heat transport coefficients in fusion plasmas. Since then, he became leader at DIFFER of the energy systems and control group. His main interests are now to further develop these methods and apply them to various energy systems and hydrology and to lead the DIFFER detachment control programme.
