Technology & Engineering

The study of plasmas, fusion, and magnetic resonance requires a core set of technology and engineering tools. Additionally, the understanding of plasmas can be used to develop new technologies with far-reaching applications. High-field magnets, high-power radio frequency sources, sensitive detectors, and various particle accelerators are used throughout the PSFC while technologies to clean the atmosphere, process garbage and drill through rock have matured from PSFC research.

Accelerators & detectors

The development and application of particle accelerators and radiation detectors facilitates the PSFC’s core scientific missions and is tightly coupled to many topical areas in the center. more

Large-scale magnets capable of high magnetic fields are a core enabling technology for many areas of scientific research, including medicine, imaging, and energy. more

Plasma-based technologies

Plasma research has resulted in the development of unique technologies in diagnostics, heating, and confinement that have significant value to other applications in energy and the environment. more

Waves & beams

The PSFC Waves and Beams group conducts research on novel sources of electromagnetic waves (lasers/masers), on the acceleration of particle beams, and on the transport of these waves and beams. more
